Abstract

We draw from a rich variety of data sources to explore whether the putative regimes derived from existing theory can be substantiated by statistical analysis of the social characteristics of contemporary societies.12 Some of these represent collections of robust administrative data on topics such as income inequality, crime, and social expenditure (OECD, ILO, World Bank, UN), while others are collections of survey data on attitudes and reported behaviour based on nationwide samples (European Values Study/World Values Survey; International Social Survey Program).
