Abstract
We have just seen how in telling their stories about buying stocks the fund managers I interviewed seemed to be speaking to a deeper shared script; they were recounting in one way or another how they had found something — an object of desire — which was both exceptional and so extremely exciting, but also safe. We also saw how my interviewees’ stories contained much evidence of searching and investigating. They processed a great deal of information, checked and double-checked, and undertook extensive calculations. In meetings they put forward their theses and then defended them against the counterarguments made against them by colleagues. But, finally, they bought the stocks and the hitherto imagined relationship began.
