Abstract
Drawing upon empirical research1 this chapter examines interactions between the leaders of the UDA and the UVF with their grassroots members. Furthermore, it will also highlight how the UDA and UVF have interacted with each other. Therefore, the central focus of this chapter is on the strategic environment, which loyalists understand as encompassing the paramilitary world. This might sound preposterous to suggest that there are two ‘worlds’; nevertheless, it is evident from the empirical data gathered that loyalist paramilitaries do disaggregate the strategic environment in which they operate.
