Emotionally Intelligent Leadership at the Top

  • Chapter
Handbook of Top Management Teams

Abstract

This chapter explores the notion of Leadership and the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) as a key element of leadership competence. ‘Leadership’ has emerged alongside technical and managerial capability as a third major element in the corporate performance triangle. The emergence of ‘emotional intelligence’ as an effective approach to identifying and developing leadership potential has perhaps been one of the major advances in recent years in our understanding of leadership. We outline the issues arising in the area of leadership and emotional intelligence and examine the relationship of emotional intelligence to that concept.
