Abstract

On January 12, 2010, the two tectonic plaques that meet below Haiti began to rub against each other. Seven minutes to five in the afternoon, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale took place, followed by 32 after-quakes of 4.0 or more during the following 9 hours.1 The epicenter was a mere 25 kilometers from the capital, and the quake struck at a distance of just 13 kilometers from the surface of the earth.2
