Abstract
Surprising moments come in many ways. Good surprises can encourage us and give us new energy. Bad surprises can knock us off course. Success comes through enjoying good surprises and not just rushing on to the next task. Keeping bad surprises in perspective and accepting they will happen can help us respond in a way that is constructive and not undermining. Being prepared for surprise is about openly accepting whatever life brings and having a thick skin when we are faced with shocks that would otherwise unnerve us. Being able to smile at surprises and be philosophical about them is central to our wellbeing.
