Abstract
The land and water rats which finally broke up the nearly 440 years of union between Denmark and Norway came in the shape of inept diplomats1 on both the English and the Danish side, landing Denmark-Norway on the losing side of the Napoleonic wars. The Congress of Vienna finally approved that Norway was to enter into a personal union with Sweden. Karl 14. Johan, Sweden’s newly appointed king, became king of Norway as well.
