Abstract
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, AKEL is the solitary Communist Party in Europe to have maintained a strong political influence along with its share of the popular vote. Notwithstanding the internal crisis that ensued in the late 1980s and the loss of a substantial layer of its cadre, AKEL is presently the biggest party in the Republic of Cyprus with electoral returns that habitually exceed the 30 per cent mark.
