The Winner’s Curse

  • Chapter

Abstract

There is a winner’s curse that affects all but the most vigilant and disciplined. When one is ahead, especially far ahead, there seems little need to look back. A racer in a comfortable lead does not need to attend to her rear view mirror. Those racing behind are most aware of the leader’s advantage, and of other up-and-comers. The winner’s curse actually bestows an advantage on the upand-coming who recognize winners’ complacency is their Achilles heel.

Don’t let your special character and values, the secret that you know and no one else does, the truth – don’t let that get swallowed up by the great chewing complacency.

(Aesop, ancient Greek philosopher, 620–564 BC)
