Why Revisit The Last Refuge?

Abstract

In January 2004, two of us struggled across the windswept campus of the University of Essex. We were heading for the library where the Peter Townsend collection is deposited. A room had been set aside and the two boxes we had asked to see were sitting on the table waiting for us. It is hard to describe the excitement we felt. For the first time we were to see and handle the old typewritten reports, the rusting paper clips and staples, and scribbled notes in what was clearly the handwriting of Peter Townsend. Here were the original data from which, nearly 50 years previously, he had produced his classic book The Last Refuge (Townsend, 1962) which reported his study of residential care for older people carried out in the late 1950s.
