Abstract

The aim of the three ‘mini-case studies’ was to see to what extent the conclusions drawn from the in-depth study of an ‘extreme case’ of welfare state retrenchment, that is, New Zealand, can be applied to a limited number of ‘diverse cases’ covering a considerable variation of welfare state structures and political-institutional arrangements in the OECD-world. Our concluding discussion is divided into an analysis of the main similarities and differences between countries and an explanation of the patterns revealed by that analysis.
