Abstract

The mid-1970s are usually regarded as the time when welfare state expansion peaked out in OECD countries. This is why 1975 is taken as the common starting point for the analysis of retrenchment politics in New Zealand as well as for the three briefer case studies presented in Chapter 7. For better orientation, the following detailed historical narrative of retrenchment politics in New Zealand is structured according to the partisan orientation of government at the time the measures were enacted (see also the election results in the Appendix).
