Abstract
Croatia has always been something of a frontierland: straddling the line between the Western Roman and Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empires and the line between the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires; and, more recently, as part of Yugoslavia, lying as a buffer between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
