Abstract

Narrowly separated from the continent of Africa, the Iberian peninsula has been subject to invasion from north and south for centuries. The original Iberians, Phoenicians and Greeks (along the coastal regions to the east and south), Celts (in the centre and north), Carthaginians (in the south-east), Romans, Visigoths and Moors all imposed their cultures on the peninsula before Christianity gained the upper hand in the 15th century.
