Abstract

Greece is the only country in the world where the adjectives ‘ancient’ and ‘modern’ have to be applied to the country, the people and their language to differentiate between the past and the present. Greece’s histiry comprises four phases: pagan ancient Greece, the Orthodox Christian Byzantine Empire, Ottoman rule and 170 years of independence.
