Abstract
There are many ways of coming to a conclusion about social and political development in post-reform China. I have chosen three ways of approaching the conclusion for the book. The first task of the conclusion will be to assess the government’s success according to the aims and targets which it has set itself. I shall then evaluate the success in the light of my proposed alternative criteria which I see as an important alternative way of assessment. More specifically, I shall discuss some major unfinished business in the broad area of social development which I believe should have been tackled during the past two decades, with particular reference to discussing policy implications for future development. Third, possible scenarios regarding the future of China’s political development will be examined.
