Abstract
As coaches, we have all failed with clients, or will fail one day, but we tend to keep our failures to ourselves. As one wit said, success is a public affair, failure is a private funeral. It is human nature to react defensively to failure: by shutting it out of our mind as quickly as possible; by consciously or unconsciously seeking to avoid putting ourselves into a similar, failure-prone situation ever again; or even reframing it so that we can say that we were not responsible. As Benjamin Franklin argued, “I did not fail the test! I just found 100 ways to get it wrong.”
