Abstract

For many people nuclear waste is the Achilles’ heal of nuclear technology. Fifty years on and ways for disposing it longer term are only just beginning to emerge and be accepted. The technical issues are relatively straightforward but offer a range of choices, which are, or should be, subject to social and political debate. This chapter will report on the debate in the United Kingdom over the choices of disposal route, and the difficulty of getting agreement over waste site location.
