Abstract
The election of Ehud Barak as Prime Minister of Israel gave new impetus to the peace process. Mr Barak had been elected on the basis of a programme that promised progress in the negotiations with the Palestinians and a unilateral withdrawal from Lebanon on the basis of United Nations Security Council Resolution 425; but, if the withdrawal from Lebanon was indeed completed by June 2000, real advancements in the negotiations with the Palestinians, after the initial optimism, were harder to come by.
