Abstract
The majority of the population is of Bantu origin. There are more than 70 different tribes, the most important being the Bemba and the Bgoni in the northeast. One of the more successful of the invading tribes was the Lozi under Lewanika, who obtained the protection of the British government in 1891. In 1900 the British South Africa Company acquired trading and mining rights. From 1911 the territory was known as Northern Rhodesia and in 1924 the Crown took over the administration.
