Abstract
STATUS. The Commonwealth of Independent States is not a state but a commu-nity of independent states which has proclaimed itself the successor to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in some aspects of international law and affairs. The member states are the founders, Russia, the Ukraine and Belorussia, and 9 subse-quent adherents: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldavia and the Central Asian republics of Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The Azerbaijani parliament ratified its adhesion in Sept., the Moldavian in Oct., 1993 and the Georgian in March 1994.
