Abstract
In 1863 the ‘United States of Colombia’ adopted this name under the new constitution of 8 May. The population was about 3m. (including Panama). The currency was gold and silver; there was no paper-money. The annual exports amounted to about US$6m., imports toUS$7m. The economic development was significantly influenced by the building of the first railway (Barranquilla-Puerto Colombia), in 1867.
