Abstract
Afteb the discovery of Hispaniola by Columbus in 1492, Spain took possession of the island and of its native Indians. Owing to war and other causes, the natives disappeared, and to repopulate the island, Bishop Las Casas in 1517 obtained permission from the Spanish Crown to bring over African Negroes, thus establishing the African-American slave traffic. The name is Indian and means ‘Land of Mountains.’
