Abstract
Egypt is an independent sovereign state. The British protectorate, declared on 18 Dec., 1914, terminated on 28 Feb., 1922, and the Sultan was proclaimed king on 15 March, 1922.

Statistical Information.—The Statistical Department, attached to the Ministry of Finance and Economy (15, Sharia Mansour, Cairo) was formed in 1905; Director-General.—Hamed El-S. Azmy. Previously, various government departments had their own statistical sections. Estimates of population were made in 1800, 1821 and 1846; the first census took place in 1873.
