Abstract

The rule of Egypt in the Sudan, was interrupted in 1882 by the Mahdi, who, with his successor, the Khalifa, held the country from 1885 for about 13 years. In 1890 an Anglo-Egyptian army commenced operations for the recovery of the lost provinces, and on 2 Sept., 1898, the overthrow of the Khalifa was completed at the battle of Omdurman. In Nov., 1899, he was finally defeated and killed by General Wingate’s forces near Gedid.
