Abstract

ISRAEL is an independent sovereign state, established by proclamation on 14 May, 1948. On the eve of the expiration of the British mandate, the ational Council, representing the Jewish population of Palestine and the World Zionist Movement, met in Tel Aviv. With reference to the resolution passed by the United Nations on 29 Nov., 1947, the National Council proclaimed ‘the establishment of the Jewish state in Palestine to be called Israel’ and assumed the functions of a provisional state council, with its executive as the provisional government. For the history of the British Mandate, see THE STATESMAN’S YEAR-BOOK, 1920–49, under PALESTINE.
