Abstract
BRAZIL was discovered on 3 May, 1500, by the Portuguese Admiral Pedro Alvares Cabrai, and thus became a Portuguese settlement; in 1815 the colony was declared ‘a kingdom,’ and on 13 May, 1822, Dom Pedro, eldest surviving son of King João of Portugal, was chosen ‘Perpetual Defender’ of Brazil by a National Congress. He proclaimed the independence of the country on 7 September, 1822, and was chosen ‘Constitutional Emperor and Perpetual Defender’ on 12 October, 1822. On 15 November, 1889, his only son, Dom Pedro II (born 1825, died 1891), was dethroned by a revolution, and Brazil declared a republic under the title of the United States of Brazil.
