Abstract
The Republic of Ecuador is situated in the north-west of South America with about one-fifth of its area lying north of the Equator. It is bounded on the north by Colombia, on the south by Peru and Brazil, on the east by Colombia and Brazil, and on the west by the Pacitic Ocean and Peru. Known as the Presidency of Quito, it was part of the original Republic of Colombia, founded by Simon Bolivar in 1819 by uniting it to the Vice-Royalty of New Granada (now Colombia) and the Captaincy-General of Venezuela. The Presidency of Quito became the Republic of Ecuador bv amicable secession May 11, 1830.
