Abstract
Protectionism is now a major issue for national governments. Protection is sought from competing ideologies — religious, economic, political and cultural. Open capitalism and fi nancial power are entertained in the West, facing a Confucian social challenge from the East. Obstinate, stubborn sanctions are mistakenly used as defenses against military and trading advances from North and South Asia and from China. Conflicting national interests lead to confrontation in global goals.
