Abstract

October 2004. I am at the University of East Anglia, delivering a paper at the In Yer Face Theatre Conference with my colleague, Dr Josephine Machon. Our paper is entitled: Tracing the (Syn)aesthetic in Sarah Kane’s 4:48 Psychosis. I begin with the words:

Due to a series of personal incidents in my private life which led me to look deeply at issues of mortality and depression and the possibility of living in the darker places of human experience, I felt uniquely drawn to Sarah Kane’s last text … it was as if I had travelled through fire and now felt strong enough to tackle such dark and beautiful subject material.
