Abstract

It is obvious that the European Union as it exists today differs greatly from the European Communities founded in the 1950s. The wish for an ‘ever-closer union’, formulated in the Treaty of Rome, has not been left unanswered. There is now free movement of capital, goods and labour, there is a European Parliament (albeit with limited powers) and, of course, an economic and monetary union is now in place. But it is equally obvious that the ever-closer union has run parallel with ever greater doubts. As the integration process has deepened, so critical voices have grown louder. In recent decades, Euro-scepticism has increased and has manifested itself in a great variety of pressure groups, political parties and other organizations (Harmsen and Spiering, 2004).
