On Becoming the Media: Low Power FM and the Alternative Public Sphere

  • Chapter
Media and Public Spheres

Abstract

KGRR,1 Grand Ridge’s new Low Power FM community radio station, is in a poor, conservative small town in northern California. Many station volunteers, however, dress in tie-dye and a few sport dreadlocks — a visual reminder of the alternative culture and politics they broadcast on KGRR’s airwaves. This case of an ‘alternative’ community radio station illustrates the dilemmas of making and defining alternative public spheres.
