Abstract

Throughout the process that empowered the bourgeoisie—from the Reformation to the Italian Army’s entry into Rome in 1870, by way of the French Revolution—the Catholic Church witnessed a progressive decline in its doctrinal prerogatives, in its property holdings, and in its material and spiritual influence. The impact in Italy was not nearly as disruptive as had been the case in sixteenth-century Germany or in eighteenth-century France, but it carried the potential of even more dire consequences for the Church.
