Abstract

Hindu pamphleteers and campaigners went all out to keep Hindu women away from Muslim men, and from symbols, customs and culture seen as ‘Muslim’. Even day-to-day contact with Muslims was perceived as a serious threat to the Hindu patriarchal order and community identity, leading to a new set of instructions for Hindu women. These attitudes paralleled high-caste exclusivities but sought to extend them to a putative Hindu community.
