Abstract
My family is in the process of planning a trip, complete with airline schedules, hotel reservations, car rental, and maps. This is a new thing for us—in past years we have rented a lake house, planted ourselves for two weeks, and refused to schedule anything. The timeless quality of these lake vacations was a remedy to over-scheduled lives with too many deadlines. Our days were filled with books, cherry pie, sand, and naps. But this year will be different. We have a plan. It came about in part because my children had started to ask why we never went anywhere (which makes me wonder about their sense of place) and in part because of my own wanderlust. I’ve engaged a travel agent, trolled websites, and purchased guidebooks. We will be busy, on the move, balancing experience moment-to-moment with thinking ahead.
I believe that education, therefore, is a process of living and not a preparation for future living.
