Abstract
The rise of the knowledge economy (Drucker 1993) and dramatic shifts to he global competition landscape are changing the nature of higher education, with universities in many of the most developed nations trading their traditional roles of addressing regional or national needs for increasing political, cultural, and economic influence around the world. It is no longer sufficient to be a leading national university; leading universities now see the need to demonstrate a substantial global reach as well.
