Abstract
This book deals with the representation of myth and religion in South Asian literature and film. The volume brings together several essays that explore the interface between religion, philosophy, mythology, gender, and fundamentalism. It is organized in two parts. Part I has a focus on religion, myth, and gender, and Part II on religion, myth, and politics. The common thread that links the two parts is the appropriation and reinterpretation of myth. All essays explore various aspects of the ongoing process of remythologizing of the present, as revealed in literature and film in South Asia. The essays in this collection respond to one and the same question: how to interpret the resurgence of myth in the present? What is the meaning of ancient and venerated myths today? What are the ideological implications of the interpretation of myths and how do they reflect and influence the power structures of contemporary societies in South Asia?
