Abstract

With a population of 1.3 million people, Hawaii was the ninth least populous state in the United States in 2007. From 2000 to 2007 the state’s population increased by 71,851 people, and is projected to increase to 1.4 million by 2025. This 0.6% projected annual growth rate compares to the projected national average of 0.8%. From 2006 to 2007 the state’s population declined by 0.2%. The state’s 2007 per capita personal income of $39,060 was higher compared to $36,826 in 2006 and the eighteenth highest in the United States, some $496 above the national average. Per capita income in Hawaii grew at a compound annual rate of 4.6% from 2000 to 2007, compared to 3.7% nationally.
