Abstract
After the conclusion of the Second World War, two incidents that may be categorized as “race riots” took place in Bangkok’s Chinatown. The first was the Yaowaraj Incident of September 1945. The second was known as the Plabplachai Incident of July 1974. The precipitating causes of the two incidents were quite different. The Yaowaraj Incident began as a clash between overseas Chinese demonstrators preparing for the Double-Ten anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of China, and the Thai police, who demanded that the demonstrators display the Thai national flag along with the national flag of the Republic of China.
