Abstract

The source of much of the wealth that exists today was created by entrepreneurs through a combination of focus, drive, and great personal and professional risk. Many entrepreneurs struggled in the early years and even long into the process of wealth creation; for many of them, the greatest challenge was lack of capital.

Dad, you know that I’ve always been intrigued with the world of business. Though nearly everyone tried to dissuade me, I majored in business and entrepreneurial studies at college and did well. For the last five years, I’ve worked at McElroy and Company and provided consulting services to growing mid-market companies. My focus was developing international markets for U.S. domestic enterprises. I’ve been successful and have been promoted steadily, but I still want to create a business of my own, much like you and grandpa did. But, to start my business, I need capital. I have to rent an office, buy equipment, and hire an assistant. I’m 27 and, if I start this business, I won’t have any income for a while or hard assets to pledge to get a loan from our bank. I’ve got a good business plan; I know my field. I think I can be very successful, but not unless I can get started. Tony may feel that it’s unfair that I get help from you when he has not received anything. But he’s 30 and probably will want to stay in teaching. I don’t want him to be upset with me, but I could really use your help.
