FDR’s Expansion of Our National Patrimony: A Model For Leadership

Abstract

In view of the rich discussions we’ve had so far, i want to begin by giving one very concrete illustration of the impact of Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR’S) environmental legacy on contemporary decision-making. As most of you know, President Clinton energetically employed the Antiquities Act to create new national monuments—protected areas—on federal lands during his term of office. It was a highlight of my public service to help craft these with Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt and the White House.
