Abstract
Using each of the types of e-govemance technologies listed in Box 2-a, this chapter presents and discusses a number of cases and initiatives, in which policy makers have experimented with e-governance tools, and some preliminary lessons are drawn. These lessons will be used and integrated into a larger framework for thinking about the institutional conditions for successful use of e-governance tools in Chapters 8 and 9. However, the chapter concludes by noting some important differences between those tools that have been widely taken up, and those that have not. This provides the basis for the following chapter, when explanations will be considered. For it is crucial for understanding the prospects for e-governance that we understand why some tools are used and why others are not, and what factors shape the ways in which policy makers demand and use these tools.
