Abstract
This chapter reflects on the direct consequences of a punitive crime policy, emphasising the substantial growth in the prison population with the subsequent increase in the level of violence behind bars. It also compares the invariability of the pre-electoral police discourse when it comes to law and order, and the reasons behind the persistence of the ‘iron-fist’ approach. Finally, it invites politicians and scholars to the table, to start a conversation about crime and crime policies leaving behind the ‘iron-fist’ paradigm.
