Abstract
Physiological states focus on body parts, the senses and the feelings they generate. The activation of metaphor (to compare, as like) allows the actor to access the body’s intelligence through indirection and unselfconsciousness. Through explorations based on various movement landscapes, energy centers and sensory stimulation, the actor embodies an elastic and empathetic relationship to character. Incorporation of Kundalini Yoga, Butoh, Contact Improvisation and Viewpoints generates dynamic exchange and “three-dimensional listening” with others. The states address psycho-physical “wheels of energy” (chakras) within the body: root (ground of being), sacral (life force), navel (appetite for life), heart (core self), throat (self-expression), third eye (presence) and crown (aura). The senses—smell, taste, sight, touch, hearing, intuition, and memory and association—are triggered simultaneously, to further emotional recollection and visceral response.
