Abstract
In the academic field of political history, Guatemala is considered to be one of the typical areas of caudillismo, particularly regarding figures such as Rafael Carrera, Justo R. Barrios, or Jorge Ubico. This chapter seizes on prevailing concepts related to the phenomenon of caudillismo and examines the importance it deserves for today’s understanding of organized collective violence, especially when it comes to the recent history of Guatemala. The relationship between caudillisitic organization of violence and, first, processes of state formation as well as, second, the country’s ethnic particularities will thereby enjoy special emphasis.
