Abstract
Socrates is hauled in front of a jury of his Athenian peers to answer the charges of worshipping strange gods and corrupting the minds of the youth. Socrates’ defense gives us a glimpse into the personality of this strange man. Socrates believes he has a “daimon” inside him who insists he be true to his calling in life to pursue truth and cultivate virtue in himself and other people. Students also learn about trait theories of personality, assessment, and the major personality tests. Classroom time is spent discussing what personality is in psychology, what its major dimensions are, and how to measure it. Students then compare this psychological understanding of personality with Socrates “eudaimonic” view.
