Abstract
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), better known as simply “North Korea,” is, without a doubt, one of the most secretive states in the world. Until recently, North Koreans had almost no access to information from the outside world, and likewise that outside world had relatively little knowledge of the domestic situation inside the DPRK. The state’s ongoing isolationism has led some modern observers to label North Korea “the Hermit Kingdom,” 1 a term used in reference to the entire Korean peninsula since the nineteenth century, when Western missionaries and would-be imperialists encountered stiff and sometimes violent resistance to outsiders. 2
