Abstract

This study raises the issue of cinematic nationalism through a closer look at the historical drama 1911 (2011), and observes that many Hong Kong and Mainland filmmakers attempt to globalize a new cinematic discourse of Greater China, but fail to reconcile a hegemonic national symbol with diverse local identities. These contradictions reflect the long-standing conflicts among different Chinese polities in Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.
