Abstract
This chapter discusses a total UN involvement in the Sierra Leone conflict and various amendments to the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) authorizing a more robust presence. It includes a discussion of Operation Barras, a British military operation in Sierra Leone against a new rebel faction known as Westside Boys, to free 11 British soldiers and a Sierra Leone officer held captive in a jungle outside Freetown. Operation Barras was the last battle before disarmament and peace in Sierra Leone. The Sierra Leonean civil war was declared over by President Tejan Kabbah on January 18, 2002, a decade after it commenced, in a ceremony held at Lungi. This chapter includes a commentary on the president’s final message to the people.
