Abstract

This chapter discusses the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) junta and a palace coup that led to Strasser’s overthrow by his own comrades. It focuses on the 1996 elections and the transfer of power to the civilian government of President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah. It highlights President Kabbah’s attempt to broker peace with Foday Sankoh and his overthrow in 1997 through another military coup led by junior members of the military. This chapter entails a discussion of the Abidjan Peace Accord, the first peace agreement between the government of President Kabbah and Foday Sankoh, leader of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF).
